Newark’s Clinton Avenue, the street outside of Mercy House, was packed with families and school-age children on Tuesday−some of whom arrived five hours in advance of the event−as volunteers inside prepared to distribute back-to-school supplies to community members. The Newark-based charity provided approximately 100 families with children grades K-12 with free supplies for the upcoming school year.
Autumn is right around the corner, and with the turn of the seasons comes another annual milestone. Children across the country will begin going back to school in late August and early September. The Archdiocese of Newark office of Schools has been enthusiastically preparing for the start of its new school year. The Scholarship Fund for Inner-City Children (SFIC), a partner of the Archdiocese of Newark, recently gave six high school sophomores and juniors from archdiocesan schools the summer vacation of their dreams by providing them with scholarships to attend the prestigious Advanced Space Academy at the U.S. Space & Rocket Center in Huntsville, AL.
The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops and Catholic education leaders are urging support for a federal school choice bill that is poised to aid families whose children attend Catholic schools. The Educational Choice for Children Act (ECCA) – S. 4416 and H.R. 8137 – would create a new tax credit for donors who give to scholarship awards, which would increase available scholarship funding.
Rather than hitting the beach or hanging out with friends, 45 teens from throughout North Jersey and Pennsylvania devoted part of their summer vacation to completing a range of community service projects for a unique camp offered by the Archdiocese of Newark’s Office for Youth & Young Adult Ministry during the last week of July. It seemed like divine intervention when, during the hottest heatwave in decades, the humidity broke long enough last week to allow 28 teens to enjoy building birdhouses. With no mobile devices in sight, they found themselves having fun gluing, coloring, and getting their hands dirty under a large tent at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in East Hanover. Hudson Catholic Regional High School (HCRHS) is rolling out a new program this fall designed to prepare students for higher education. The Media Arts Certificate Program is an 18-credit program hosted by Hudson Catholic Regional High School and New Jersey City University. The goal of the program is to promote successful undergraduate educational experiences for qualified students during the 2022-2023, 2023-2024, and 2024-2025 academic years.
Ms. Juliette Wester is a history teacher at Seton Hall Preparatory School in West Orange, NJ. She joined the Seton Hall family in 2014 and has since become a fixture in the school community. Julie was awarded the Monsignor Michael E. Kelly Award this past school year, Seton Hall Prep’s equivalent to Teacher of the Year Award. Her school community went on to nominate her for the New Jersey Council for American Private Education (NJCAPE) 2022 New Jersey Nonpublic School Teacher of the Year Award.
