The Virgin Mary, often described as the “Mother of the Church,” is venerated by Catholics during the month of May as a tribute to her life-giving role in the history of the Church. Since the 13th century, Catholics have set aside the month of May for the veneration of Mary.
In 2018, Pope Francis added the Feast of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of the Church to the Roman Calendar. The Pope decided to add the holiday after carefully considering the Blessed Mother’s maternal role in the history of the Church. The feast day, which falls on May 29 this year, is celebrated every year on the Monday after Pentecost.
May Crowning is a longstanding tradition in the Catholic Church. Held during the month of May, it involves a Mass or prayer service in which a statue of the Blessed Virgin is bestowed with a crown of flowers upon her head or at her feet. Participants in the ritual often sing songs and recite prayers in honor of the Blessed Mother.
