The Catholic high schools in the Archdiocese of Newark participate in the Cooperative Admissions Examination Program (COOP), which is designed to facilitate the high school admissions process for students and families. Schools that participate in the COOP program have agreed to use the same entrace exam and centralized registration process.
High School Placement TestStudents seeking admission to participating high schools should register and sit for the High School Placement Test, which is administered to 8th grade students in November of each year. The HSPT has been developed by STS Testing as a tool for objectively evaluating students in a number of areas important for success in high school. As part of the registration process, students will select up to three high schools to receive official score reports. To learn more about the exam's content and scoring, review the Parent Resource on the STS website.
Ninth Grade Applicant RecordEach applicant must have a completed Ninth Grade Applicant Record form submitted to each of the high schools to which he or she is applying. These records include grades, standardized test results, attendance and conduct in Grades 6, 7, and 8. Parents are requested to complete the Permission for Release of Records, Student Information, and High School Choice sections of the form before submitting it to the student’s 8th grade teacher, counselor, or principal (not the school to which you are applying).
Other RequirementsIndividual high schools may have additional requirements for applicants such as an application, essay, student interview, etc. Please be sure to consult directly with the school(s) to confirm those requirements. You may also view a summary of each school's admissions information by referencing our High School Guide.
Non-Participant SchoolsSome private high schools in the archdiocese opt to use their own entrance exam. If you are considering one of these schools for your student, it is important to confer directly with their admissions representatives to ensure you are aware of any deadlines and requirements specific to that school.
